Finger, blow,
overblow.

Tap the tone holes to cover them, from top to bottom. Start with the thumb hole “T”. Then hold down “Blow”, tap the mouthpiece or use the space bar. The small “R” key is the register key: the clarinet doesn’t jump up an octave but a twelfth.

Lessons in detail

How your clarinet lessons work.

The first lessons

Embouchure, breathing and your first notes in the low register, the chalumeau. You'll learn to cover the tone holes securely and will soon be playing your first melodies.

Over time

The register key takes you into the higher register, the clarion. Add scales, articulation and a repertoire ranging from classical and jazz to film music and klezmer.

For kids and adults

For kids from age 6, there are smaller, lighter clarinets that make getting started easier. Adults love the warm, round sound and the range of styles.

Practising at home

Change your reeds regularly and wipe the instrument dry after playing. Short daily practice sessions strengthen your embouchure and tone.
